Brazil nuts are wild nuts grown in the Amazon rainforests. Rich rainforest soils contribute to the wide range of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals found in Brazil nuts.
Brazil nuts are renowned for their high selenium content, and are the richest known food source of this important nutrient. Selenium is an essential mineral and antioxidant that is needed daily for a healthy immune system. Just three Brazil nuts per day will provide your recommended daily allowance of selenium, whilst also being rich in calcium, copper, zinc, and vitamin E.
It is one of the Amazon’s longest-living trees, often reaching an age of 500 to 1,000 years. Famous for reaching heights of over 50 metres, the Brazil nut tree towers above other trees in the Amazon rainforest.
The fruit of this majestic tree resembles a large coconut, with woody shells of dark brown colour. Each pod holds between 10 and 25 Brazil nuts, which are technically seeds.
These fruits are only collected once they are ripe and have fallen to the ground. This occurs during the rainy season (from December to March), and they are hacked open with machetes to obtain the in-shell nuts.
When considering additional activities, such as transportation and processing, the Brazil nut industry generates employment for over 100,000 people and is the most important employer in the Amazonian state of Madre de Dios in Peru, where we are based.

Brazil nuts are the only commercial nut found exclusively in Amazon forests. This distinction, together with the rising demand for these Amazon nuts, has encouraged the Peruvian government to mandate the conservation of the Brazil nut tree. It is, therefore, illegal to cut them down and for this reason, Brazil nuts are known as the ‘guardian angels of the Amazon forest’!
